I have learned from a colleague that J.L. Lightfoot is Dr. Jane L. Lightfoot. I detected no evidence of her gender or her full first name in the book I reviewed. I apologize to her for my error and to my female colleagues for making the default assumption of male gender (statistically likely to be wrong in slightly over half the cases) of authors whose usual name form does not obviously indicate it.
