I read with great interest Peter Vernezze’s review of Terence Irwin’s and Gail Fine’s Aristotle Introductory Readings (BMCR 97.05.09) but was distressed to see that the author had misrepresented Hackett’s claims about the book. The phrases “most detailed glossary in any student edition” and “editors’ extensive notes” do appear in our catalogue—as copy for Irwin and Fine’s Selections (1995), not the smaller (and streamlined) Introductory Readings.
It might well prove a valuable service to instructors of ancient philosophy if BMCR reviewed Selections, especially since no evaluation of Irwin and Fine’s translation was attempted in its review of Introductory Readings.
