Dear Sir or Madam:
In his review (BMCR 03.06.09) Professor Potter criticises my treatment of Thucydides iii 30.4 where he says I argue for Steup’s κοινόν. I do nothing of the sort. I make it clear that I disapprove of κοινόν. The reading I prefer and adopt in my long note is καινόν, and at the end of the note I am careful to signal my rare departure from the Oxford Text, which has κενόν. The word καινόν appears nowhere in Potter’s treatment, though it may have disappeared in an unchecked misprint (his reference to Polybius 24 should be to Polybius 29).
