Hermes Messenger 2.2 (Fall, 1994), an advertising newsletter of Hermes Publishing Company, 180 South 300 West #201, Salt Lake City, UT 84102, including the following announcement for Carnifex, an instructional computer program:

Carnifex presents you with blank spaces that represent the letters of a Latin word it has chosen for you, and it offers you eight chances to guess the letters of the word. Each time you guess an incorrect letter, Carnifex moves you closer to complete dismemberment, first by putting you between the posts of punishment, then by tying you to the posts, and then by chopping off one limb after another until only your head remains. At that point, you’d better guess the letters correctly or your head will roll.
